Financial Ministry's Investigation Service Arrests Three for Land Fraud in Kakheti

Official The Financial Ministry's Investigation Service of Georgia said on Friday it had arrested three people, including a foreign national, for attempting fraud and fraudulent acquisition of a large plot of land in the country's eastern region through the creation and use of fake documents.

The service said investigations it conducted found that the perpetrators tried to run the scheme using fake power of attorney agreements and fraudulent purchase agreements.

They used these documents to illegally obtain a 2,710,000 square meter plot of land located in the Kakheti region.

The agency added that the investigative service's actions prevented “a significant amount of property damage” to the landowner, while noting that the crime can be punishable by imprisonment for between seven and nine years.
